Discover the best things to do in Sal, one of Cape Verde’s most popular islands, is often seen as a place for pure relaxation. However, if like us, you are wondering what to do in Sal and enjoy exploring and immersing yourself in local culture, there’s plenty to do beyond lounging on the stunning beaches. Follow our great itinerary on how to spend a week in Sal, discovering its vibrant culture, breathtaking landscapes, and welcoming people.
Where to Stay in Sal: Robinson Hotel
If you are looking for a comfortable stay with great amenities, numerous activities and outstanding food, the Robinson Hotel is an excellent choice. Situated right by the beach, it offers easy access to the turquoise waters and golden sands that make Sal famous. We found its location convenient for walking into Santa Maria, the island’s bustling town, making it a perfect base for our adventures. We cannot recommend this hotel enough!

Day 1: Exploring Santa Maria and Its Pier
One of the best things to do in Sal on your arrival, is to walk into Santa Maria. Head for the pier, which is the heart of activity, where fishermen bring in their daily catch, locals barter for fresh seafood, and tourists soak up the vibrant atmosphere. It’s a fantastic spot for people-watching and photography.
Tip: Be cautious if a friendly local offers to take you to a market—these experiences often end with pressure to buy something. Instead, explore the main street, where you’ll find charming shops, including Djunta Mo Art fair-trade stores selling locally made crafts. Don’t miss the Santa Maria Church, a small yet significant landmark offering insight into the island’s religious traditions.
If you want to discover more then return to Santa Maria later in the week as we did!

Day 2: Sal Island Tour
Book an island tour through GetYourGuide to explore the best things to do in Sal. Highlights of our trip included:
- Pedra de Lume Salt Mines – A former salt mine where you can float effortlessly in the high-salinity water.
- Buracona (Blue Eye) – A natural rock pool that glows a mesmerizing shade of blue in the sunlight.
- Palmeira – A small, charming fishing village with colorful houses and a relaxed vibe.
- Shark Bay – A chance to wade into shallow waters with baby lemon sharks up close.
- Miragem – A fascinating optical illusion in the desert where you can see a ‘mirage’ effect caused by the heat.

Day 3: Visiting the Botanical Gardens
For a change of scenery, visit the Viveiro Botanical Garden & Animal Sanctuary. We enjoyed the hour’s walk from Santa Maria, though a taxi is a convenient alternative. Here, you can wander through lush greenery, learn about local plant species, and even interact with some resident animals. There’s also a charming café where you can relax with a cool drink.

Day 4: Wandering Through Santa Maria and Walking to Shell Beach
Before heading to Shell Beach, take time to wander through Santa Maria and admire its impressive street art, which can be found throughout the town. The vibrant murals and graffiti-style paintings showcase local culture, history, and creativity. Take some time to explore the residential area where locals live and visit the municipal market, a lively spot showcasing local produce and handcrafted goods. After exploring, continue your walk to Shell Cemetery Beach, a quiet spot on the other side of Santa Maria The shell graveyard is a dumping ground where millions of empty shells, previously emptied of snails in kitchens and restaurants, are dumped. It is a fascinating place and there are good views of the coastline.

Day 5: Relaxing on the Beach and a Sunset Walk to the Lighthouse
Sal’s beaches are some of the best in the world, with soft golden sand and crystal-clear water. They are perfect for soaking up the sun and a walk along the waters edge. You are likely encounter beach vendors selling handmade jewelry and souvenirs. They’re friendly and will accept a firm ‘no’ if you’re not interested in buying anything. In the evening, take a walk to the lighthouse near the Riu Palace Hotel. It’s a fantastic spot to watch the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean.

Day 6: A Trip to Espargos
For a deeper understanding of local life, take a trip to Espargos, again bookable via GetYourGuide. Here, you can:
- Explore the town’s colorful streets and local markets.

Cape Verde is known for its ‘No Stress’ attitude—a philosophy of life that embodies relaxation, friendliness, and a laid-back approach to daily living. The locals are warm and welcoming, making you feel at home instantly. Music is an integral part of Cape Verdean culture, with morna, a melancholic yet beautiful genre made famous by Cesária Évora, who is the subject of many of the beautiful murals throughout the island
If you love food then one of the best things to do in Sal is to enjoy sampling local dishes such as Cachupa, a slow-cooked stew made with beans, corn, vegetables, and either fish or meat. Fresh seafood is abundant, with grilled tuna, lobster, and octopus being popular choices. Drinks wise, try the local grogue, a strong sugarcane rum, or ponche, a sweeter, fruit-infused version of grogue. The local Cape Verdean beer is Strela, which is perfect for a warm day by the beach.
