10 Great Things to do in Stratford upon Avon

Last Updated on: November 20, 2024

Stratford upon Avon is a picturesque town in central England, easily connected to both London and Birmingham.  Being the home of Shakespeare and the Royal Shakespeare theatre , it is of course full of many historical delights.  The River Avon, which flows through the middle, adds to the charm of the town.  There is plenty do and see so make sure you visit for a day or even for a weekend. Below are 10 great things to do in Stratford upon Avon.

Shakespeare’s Birth Place

Shakespeare's house, Stratford upon Avon

Our first stop of the day was Shakespeare’s birthplace, one of the most famous things to do in Stratford upon Avon. It was one of the largest houses on the street during Shakespeare’s time due to his father’s wealthy profession as a glove maker, wool trader as well as being a money lender on the side! There is an exhibition, before you enter the house.  In each room there are staff, who are happy to explain more about Shakespeare and the house.

We found their explanation on the history of some of quotes of Shakespeare interesting, particularly as we use many of them today.  Did you know that when you are suing phrases such as ‘it’s all Greek to me’ and ‘too much of a good thing’ you are quoting Shakespeare!

We bought a joint ticket from here which also gave as access to Anne Hathaway’s cottage and New Place.

Anne Hathaway’s Cottage

30 minutes’ walk out of town you can find Anne Hathaway’s cottage.  It was a pleasant walk through recreational fields after you leave the main town. If you prefer to drive there is a car park located at the property.

The cottage is set in beautiful grounds and was the childhood home of Anne Hathaway.  Walk through the property and see it decorated from the different eras of its existence in the Hathaway family.  It was much extended during its time as the family were sheep farmers which was a good money earner during the 16th century.  The original part of the house appears as it would have done during the time of Anne Hathaway and William Shakespeare.  There are again plenty of staff on hand to tell stories and answer any questions.

If you have driven here, then at this point it is worth visiting Mary Arden’s Farm.  Check if it is open as unfortunately it was closed in the day we visited Stratford.

Visit Trinity Church

Walking back into town and towards the river, the next stop was Trinity Church.  Set on the riverbank with extensive grounds, this church was where Shakespeare attended services during his childhood and later as an adult when he was in town. He was christened here and, along with his wife Anne Hathaway, was buried in the church.

There is a small charge to enter the part of the church where Shakespeare is buried.  In this section you can also see the registration of his christening and death.  Shakespeare’s Funerary Monument (memorial) is also located in this section.

The Black Swan (Dirty Duck) Pub

As you walk along the river from the church you come to the Black Swan Pub.  Trading under this name since 1776, this pub is popular with thespians and locals have given it the nickname ‘Dirty Duck’. It is the only pub in England which now trades under two names.

Its location is close to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and is it often frequented by actors.  The actors bar has memorabilia from the various names who have frequented the pub.

The pub is well located and reasonably priced and a visit here is a one of the fun things to do in Stratford-upon-Avon.  We enjoyed out lunch here and would definitely return.

Shakespeare School and Guild Chapel

From here we went on to visit the School and Guild chapel.  On the way you pass Hall’s Croft, the previous home of Shakespeare’s daughter and son-in-law.  From here we visited the Guild Chapel, which has historic connections to Shakespeare’s family.

Around the corner from here is the black and white timber beamed building which was Shakespeare’s school.  It is possible to visit, but we didn’t on this occasion.

Visit New place

New place is the location of Shakespeare’s adult home.  The house no longer exists but there is an exhibition and extensive grounds. It is thought that at one time they stretched all the way down to the river bank.  They are both enjoyable and beautiful to walk around.  The gardens and artworks have been designed with tourists in mind, to give an insight into Shakespeare’s life.

The Fourteas

With all the things to do in Stratford upon Avon, don’t miss this amazing cafe for afternoon tea. The Fourteas is a quaint 1940’s vintage tearoom not far the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.  Bunting, union jacks and 1940’s memorabilia decorate the tearoom, this along with the music of the era and costumes of the staff give an authentic feel.

They serve breakfast, afternoon tea and cream teas as well as the usual British classic main meals.  They then have a very large menu for tea ranging from black tea varieties, Green teas and a number of infusions.

We opted for the delicious Sweet Vera Cream tea and did not regret our choice!

Enjoy a Boat trip

Enjoy a trip on the river; boats leave regularly on the riverbank, just along from the Royal Shakespeare theatre.

The Boat trip lasted 40 minutes and went up the river, past the church and the back of some very ice houses.  There is a commentary available or you can use a basic written guide which points out the main highlights.  This made an enjoyable end to the day!
